See I found that GPT-3 dealt well with love and death, so the content I fed it continued to amplify in that direction Does this show that my pretensions that this is an authorless piece are nonsense? Both yes and no, but I’ll leave the elaboration for others. Yet as I selecting chunks of famous poetry, and picking from alternate outputs by the computer, a theme did emerge despite myself, gaining moment as the sections progressed, becoming, if anything, a little too clear- a poem about thwarted, tragic gay love. I hope to show it to you.Ĭould a poem partly written by computer be said to have a single meaning?- even less so than a normal poem, surely. I know that sounds like gibberish or so much postmodern rubbish, but I really mean it in a quite direct sense. This transcendence by particularity gives it a freedom poetry has always escaped its author more than any other form of writing. It is constantly alluded to in other writing, and constantly alludes to other writing. Really good poetry transcends time and place, not through abstraction, but through linking concrete things together. I love the way it alludes, rises and flows through language. The goal: to create a poem without an author. With GPT-3 in mind I conceived an idea- create a poem made up of a composite of some of the best and most famous poetry ever written by humans in English, and the words of a machine, with a few words of my own thrown in (5-10%) mostly for bridging purposes. These patterns include millions of lines of poetry. ![]() GPT-3 is a powerful neural network that has been trained to “write” by feeding it millions of pages from the internet, having it learn the patterns in text. ![]() It also contains reproductions of hate material for the purposes of critique/parody. Note on content: This work contains content of a violent and sexual nature though nothing terribly graphic.
